Senior Research Engineer – Design & Simulation

This exciting opportunity will let you do all of the above and more as you join one of the UK’s leading technology centres dedicated to the continuous advancement of technology, processes and the Manufacturing sector within the UK.

Joining the Design & Simulation team you will work in a client facing role across a range of projects to support leading names in the industry as they seek to design and optimise their factories and overall business performance. Your role will see you responsible for project-based creative problem solving, conceptual solutions, system design and optimisation.

Exposed to businesses of varying size across all sectors from automotive and aerospace through to food, electronics and Oil & Gas you will apply your knowledge of operations management techniques to real engineering problems and their effects. Projects will vary in size from new production lines or process improvements to remove bottlenecks through to full new factory layouts.

Key responsibilities will include:

-          Conducting analysis to define and understand business problems


-          Identifying potential solutions and strategies to implement change


-          Independent supply of project deliverables in line with quality, cost and delivery targets by producing and maintaining project plans and status reports


-          Technical and sub-team leadership to others in your area of expertise


-          Technical leadership and project management of project and work package portfolio over £250,000 in value


-          Lead project proposals and business case writing for projects over £250,000


-          Customer and Partner liaison in large collaborative projects


-          Lead customer engagement to win new customers and new business


-          Generation of key project and strategic initiatives

Sound Interesting?

To carry out this role they are seeking applicants degree educated in operation management/ research, mathematics, engineering, manufacturing, modelling, simulation or physics. You need to be able to demonstrate at least 5 years’ experience leading discrete event simulation studies. You will also need manufacturing, , programming and data analytics experience as well as experience delivering complex discrete event simulation (DES) studies.

Technical skills they seek include:


-          Use of statistical analysis tools such as Minitab, SPSS or R


-          Programming skills such as VBA, C++ or Java


-          Knowledge and past use of Discrete Event Simulation (DES) software such as Witness, Plantsim, Flexsim, Simulink or Simul8


-          Project Management experience


-          Knowledge of scheduling and sequencing optimisation


-          Layout design or cost modelling experience would be beneficial.
